Studying abroad is an option that most colleges offer in order for you to experience a culture outside of the United States. But not all schools and programs treat studying abroad in the same way. Here are a few available options!

 Troy University

Troy has multiple options for spring break and a couple for the summer. The shorter programs have a faculty member head up the 7-10 day event. There are a lot of different places to choose from, and different opportunities per major for college credit. There is a tab on the website (Funding-Students) where students can look up study abroad scholarship opportunities from different associations, as well as department funds. They also have an exchange program where you are somewhat on your own for an entire semester in one country. The exchange program teaches you independence and allows you to make your own itinerary.

Jacksonville State University

JSU has study abroad and exchange programs as well. For more of a guided experience, the best way to go is studying abroad. A faculty member plans the trip and duration, sets up what college credit can be received from the trip, and so forth. These only last a week or two. While the exchange programs last for at least six weeks, they do require the student to be more independent, and it is the student’s responsibility to set up their itinerary.

Faulkner University

Faulkner University has an 89-day European study abroad program in which the instructor helps guide the students throughout the trip, allowing them two weeks of free travel on their own. There are college credit and foreign language opportunities available. For more information visit www.faulkner.edu

“I did my research and felt that our instructor really prepared us for what to expect. I also thought I would miss home halfway through, but when it got to the last few days, I did not want to leave. We constantly were traveling to new places, so it was fun to encounter all the different cultures. I had a little difficulty balancing my classes, but I had to remember that I was there for my education and the quicker I got my studies done, the more time I had to roam around and explore. I definitely learned time management and how to be flexible, which I feel will help me in any career I choose. It was awesome being able to travel and experience places that I had read and studied about. To actually walk in the same place was eye-opening.”

People to People

This program gives high school students the opportunity to travel and learn abroad. Not only do they get to experience other cultures, but through interacting with other people, they also gain insight on what the rest of the world has to offer. Parents: Don’t worry. There is plenty of information available, and there is ample preparation by the leaders of People to People, so you know your child is safe and can have the best educational exploration there is. If you are a high school teacher and want to take a group of students to another country, there are lesson plans and different itineraries for you to choose from.

“Back in 2011, I was contacted about attending People to People: Mediterranean Itinerary, and while I was initially hesitant, I eventually went on the trip and it ended up being one of the most life- changing and formative experiences of my life. It’s been about 5 years and now I have a little sister who will also be traveling. Experiences like this really do change your life.”
