Teen Spotlight: Christopher Valencia

his story: Christopher is an instrumental member of Montgomery Catholic’s cross country and track teams. He explains, “As a chubby 7th grader, running was one of the last things I wanted to do. My friend Tyler convinced me to join. I hated it at first, but I was persistent and got better. I love running, especially with all of my teammates.” In addition to participating in athletics, Christopher is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and is also a Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Foundation alumni. He shares, “My favorite thing about Montgomery Catholic is that we have a chapel available to us through the entire day and the fact that we celebrate Mass as a school is really special.” When asked to share the best advice he has ever received, Christopher replied, “I learned from a priest at school that we as people are ultimately fulfilled in our relationship with God.”

what’s next: “I would like to go into the medical field, possibly as a dentist.” He explains, “I like to interact with people, and I’m passionate about the wellbeing of others.”

PG (parental guidance) rating: “I’m proud of my large Colombian-American family,” Christopher expresses. He adds, “My mother is one of my biggest inspirations. She raised me to be the person I am. I look up to her hardworking attitude, and the fact that she puts God before anything else.”

parents’ perspective:  Maria shares, “Christopher has a good heart, good judgment, and a good relationship with God. I’m very proud that my son is disciplined, well-mannered, and committed to achieving his goals.”

parent-to-parent: “Set rules and boundaries, and show you trust them.” Maria adds, “We taught Christopher to set priorities. Discipline, respect, love, and constant communication are important.
