Exploring Careers at Summer Camp

With the end of the school year quickly approaching, you’re probably daydreaming of relaxing the summer away. While it’s definitely important to leave some time to unwind by the pool, there are many reasons why it may be wise (and more fun!) to consider a summer camp.

Stay Active and Unplugged. Spending excessive amounts of time on your devices can lead to you becoming more sedentary and less engaged. Camp activities will keep you active and engaged with others.

Expand Your Horizons. Jumping into a diverse new circle of peers and learning about unfamiliar skills or hobbies is a great way to broaden your interests. Exposure to new experiences and ideas can lead to discovering strengths and passions you may have otherwise never known about.

Find a Career. Look for camps that offer the opportunity to learn more about career fields and have some hands-on experience. You may also learn about essential information related to your desired career field, such as educational requirements, projections on where the jobs are, and how the market will continue to grow.

Lauren Moyer is a high school senior at Dutchtown High School in Hampton, Georgia. She had the opportunity to experience Tuskegee’s AgriTREK program in 2016.

What were the highlights of your summer experience with AgriTREK?
I was able to explore the diverse avenues of agriculture. This included taking trips to a wildlife center in Tuskegee where I learned about forestry and wildlife conversation. Additionally, I had the opportunity to work directly with a mentor in the Animal Genetics Lab of Dr. Olga Bolden-Tiller.

What opportunities did AgriTREK bring about for you?
I gained knowledge of the various educational and career facets of agriculture, along with some rich lab experience. I became more interested in agriculture as a future collegiate field of study. In doing so, I immersed myself in my school’s FFA chapter and became very active in regional, state, and national competitions.

Would you say it was a good way to spend some of your summer?
Absolutely! Agri-Trek gave me more insight on what I would like to do in the future. The best way to explore your educational and career passions is to look for pre-collegiate summer programs.

April Johnson is a current Tuskegee University student pursuing a degree in
animal science. She also had a chance to experience one of Tuskegee’s
summer programs: AgDiscovery.

What were the highlights of your summer experience with AgDiscovery?
I got to participate in a thorough research project with graduate students on campus, as well as contribute to smaller presentations that dealt with team building and professionalism throughout the two-week experience.

What opportunities did AgDiscovery bring for you?
AgDiscovery allowed me to get early college experience. We stayed in the dorms on campus, ate in the school cafeteria, interacted with current students, and ultimately got a good feel of what being at college was like. I would highly recommend AgDiscovery to anyone who is even moderately
interested. You’ll be more ahead than you would think by the time you start college, and the experiences that you’ll get while attending the program will last a lifetime.
