While you’re filling your shopping carts with exciting new dorm decor and checking off your college packing list, make sure you don’t forget these 5 dorm essentials!
1. Bedding & Curtains
You will need to bring your own sheets, pillows and comforter. Plan to bring at least two sets of sheets because let’s face it, you won’t do laundry as often as you should. If you enjoy sleeping in, make sure to get some black out curtains and a tension rod to hang them up with.
2. Shower Necessities
Depending on your dorm setup, you may have to use community showers, have suitemates, or have your own bathroom in your room. This will affect what you need to bring because you may have to carry all of your toiletries back and forth from the bathroom. A shower caddy, slippers, towels, wash-cloths, and a robe are just a few of the things you will need for that bathroom commute. For private bathrooms, you will likely need shower storage.
3. Cleaning Supplies
Your mom is no longer there to clean up behind you, so it is your job to keep your space clean. Part of being a good roommate is keeping your things lean and tidy. Bring a small vacuum or broom (depending on your floor) and all-purpose cleaner. A magic eraser or some Lysol wipes are always good to keep on hand. Make sure you have laundry detergent as well.
4. Storage
Dorm rooms are notoriously small and lacking storage space. Make sure you bring additional storage with you. If your dorm room has a high bed or one that can be adjusted, you can bring storage drawers or containers to put underneath your bed to add storage without taking up space in the room. Efficiency is key!
5. Hooks & Tacks
A big hassle in dorm living are the rules on hanging things up on your walls. At most dorms, you can’t use nails or screws, so that leaves you with command strips or tacks. Heavy wall decor is pretty much a no-go, so plan ahead and make sure you have the right equipment to get your room ready.
