“A good snapshot keeps a moment from running away.” - Eudora Welty
Senior portraits are a representation of one of the most exciting (and scary) times in the lives of both teens and their parents. Professional photographer Nikki P. offers her tips on finding a photographer who will give you and your teen photos you’ll treasure.
In senior portrait photography sessions, the most beautiful and treasured portraits are the ones in which the subjects are being themselves—making “that face” you recognize as being “so them”— especially as a parent.
Finding the right photographer
Obviously, you want a photographer who creates images you love the look of—but it shouldn’t stop there. Contact the photographer and ask for a phone consultation so that you can get a feel for their personality. Ask advice on any aspect of the session—from locations to what outfits to bring. It’s about the entire experience, not just the time spent actually shooting. It’s important to me to take time to get to know my clients and who they are and what they envision for their senior portraits. Their input is vital—It’s their session, and I want it to reflect their personal style.
Talk to people whose senior portraits you love and ask about their experience to see if they would recommend the photographer. The best compliment I can get is a referral from a happy client!
