The Alabama Restricted License Law for Young Drivers states:
- Only one passenger — except for parents, guardians or licensed drivers over the age of 21 — is allowed in the car with a 16-year-old driver.
- New drivers aren’t allowed to use “handheld communication devices,” meaning cell phones.
- A 17-year-old driver who has been licensed for more than six months and does not have any traffic tickets can earn an unrestricted license. But if the driver gets a ticket, the restriction remains until the driver is 18.
