Occupation: Assistant Commissioner, Southern States Athletic Conference
With a dad who was once the mayor of Montgomery and is also a retired U.S. Congressman and a mom who was a district judge, it’s fair to say that public service is in Katie’s blood. No surprise that her childhood dream was to become president of the United States. In fact, she still harbors that dream today. “Both of my parents have true servant hearts, and through their political positions were able to help those around them, and nothing would make me happier than to have the same opportunity one day,” she said.
But until it’s necessary to get her 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue address stamp made, she’s got a sunny outlook and is enjoying her duties as Assistant Commissioner, Southern States Athletic Conference, which include hosting a segment of the conference’s weekly television show on Fox Sports South, handling media relations, maintaining the conference websites and social media, designing marketing and promotional campaigns, coordinating conference championships, and more. Katie took the time to share her thoughts on parental advice, choosing a path and stopping to smell the roses.
Dad’s Advice: My dad is always full of advice, but one that sticks with me is, “As long as you’re honest in everything you do, you’ll have nothing to worry about.”
Rookie Mistake: If you’ve grown up with strict rules, the temptation to take advantage of your new environment may strike. Creating personal boundaries and holding yourself accountable for your own actions are musts for survival.
Career Goals: I’m just excited to have the opportunity before me right now. I do look forward to seeing what other doors may open in my future, but I’m in no hurry as I grow more in my current job.
Lesson Learned: Instead of wishing my time away, always being anxious about getting to the next stage in life, I would’ve slowed down to appreciate every moment that would eventually be only a memory.
Fun Fact: Katie earned a scholarship working as a 911 dispatch operator in Auburn.
